Round Pond Estate, owned and operated today by the second generation of our family, is a 468 acre Rutherford farm and winery that specializes in the creation of pure, expressive wines, artisan foods and unforgettable experiences—all from the heart of Napa Valley.

In addition to a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and 362 acres of Rutherford vineyards, our estate includes 5 acres of gardens, 12 acres of olive orchards, and one of only two olive mills in the region. The family also owns a special 10 acre vineyard in the famed Oakville bench.

 Round Pond's Winemaking:

Our Rutherford estate spans 362 acres of vineyards, primarily planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. With over 30 years and two generations of winegrowing experience, we are farmers first and believe great wine starts in the vineyards. To promote natural balance and vineyard health, we have dedicated ourselves to the principles of sustainable winegrowing.

Since purchasing our first Rutherford vineyard here in 1983, our approach to sustainable winegrowing has made our Cabernet Sauvignon prized by numerous esteemed wineries. Today, our vineyard represents 12% of all Cabernet Sauvignon grown in Rutherford, and we continue to sell the vast majority of our grapes to over 20 wineries in the Napa Valley.

In 2002, our family made its first barrel of estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted from select blocks of our best estate vineyards, our wines embody the essence of a terroir-inspired, Napa Valley winemaking philosophy. Today, as winemakers our goal is simple – to allow each wine to find its own expressive voice.

From our commitment to vine balance to our gentle winemaking approach, the wines of Round Pond Estate benefit from loving attention that includes small lot fermentation and patient aging. In the vineyard we harvest at peak ripeness, handsorting and destemming the fruit before applying a gentle press and cold soak. In order to extract rich colors, aromas and flavors, we emphasize extended maceration of the grapes. Alongside these artisan techniques we also employ cutting-edge technology, like custom-built fermenters, which continuously regulate temperature to within a fraction of a degree, ensuring control and quality. Adding additional layers of depth and nuance, our barrel-aging program utilizes the very finest French oak coopers.

For more than four decades, the wines of St. Francis Winery & Vineyards have reflected the finest mountain and valley vineyards in Sonoma County. Our founder, Joe Martin, fell in love with Sonoma Valley and established St. Francis Vineyard in 1971, planting 22 acres of Chardonnay and the first 60 acres of Merlot in Sonoma Valley. After achieving great success as a grower, Joe opened his own winery in 1979 with his business partner Lloyd Canton.

 St. Francis's Winemaking:

St. Francis is a Certified Sustainable, family-owned Winery, and we have worked throughout our history to preserve Sonoma County’s natural resources. The state-of-the art Winery we built in 1999 includes a 457-kilowatt solar energy system, and we have been recognized for our work to conserve nearby creeks and waterways. Preserving Sonoma County for future generations is very much a part of who we are, what we do, and how we run our business.

Our Winery and stunning mission-style Tasting Room is in the heart of Sonoma Valley surrounded by estate vineyards. The bell tower houses a 1,000-pound bronze bell cast by the Marinelli Foundry in Italy. It chimes every hour and can be heard throughout the valley.

Today, a new generation of winemakers, Katie Madigan and Chris Louton, continues our long tradition of luscious, elegant, fruit-driven wines from Sonoma County grapes. We farm more than 380 acres of Certified Sustainable estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley, each with varying compositions of loam, clay and volcanic soils. We also nurture long-term relationships with top Sonoma County grape growers, giving the Winery access to some of the region’s most coveted old vines Zinfandel and other varietals from acclaimed vineyards.

When Debra Mathy purchased Dutcher Crossing in 2007, fulfilling her lifelong desire to own a winery in Sonoma County, the operation came with 35 acres and made five wines. Over the ensuing years, Debra has nutured a dedicated team of talented winemakers, tasting room employees, and support staff who all share her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for quality. Today, under Debra’s leadership and creative vision, Dutcher Crossing offers more than thirty wines from a variety of wine regions in Sonoma, Napa, and Mendocino counties and owns 75 acres of estate-designated vineyards. The vintage penny farthing bicycle on the label pays homage to Debra’s passion as a cyclist and collector and is also a tribute to her father, who encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

 Dutch Crossing's Philosophy:

Everything we do at Dutcher Crossing begins with the concept of family. Whether you are the oldest or newest member of the winery, everyone’s contribution is needed and integral to our success. From the vineyards to the tasting room, even though we all have walked different paths on our journey to Dutcher Crossing, we’ve settled into family life together.

Our belief is simple—to be a well-balanced, three-legged stool. Leg one is make the best wine we can staying true to the vineyard, vintage, and varietal. The second leg is the beautiful sense of place within our vineyards and winery. Finally, our third leg is hospitality. Whether you are a long-time visitor or new to the property, we want to welcome and treat everyone as we would our own mothers. With the balance of all three legs, we create an experience like non-other in Sonoma County.

A common theme runs through the uncommon wineries in the portfolio of Hess Family Wine Estates.

An unparalleled passion and curiosity combines with a pioneering spirit that stretches over five generations of the Hess family since 1844, and on into the next generation of family leadership appointed by Founder Donald Hess.

Each of the family’s wineries – in California and Argentina – produce outstanding, highly acclaimed wines that stand alongside the very best. Quiet leadership in sustainable practices dates back more than 30 years when Donald Hess first came to the rugged hillsides of Mount Veeder in Napa Valley, and directed that Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards be crafted while winegrowers respect and nurture the land by “returning what we take.”

Today, Hess Family Wine Estates is recognized as one of the premier family-owned and family-led companies in the world of wine.

 Hess's Story:

As fifth generation Hess family, Tim and Sabrina consider themselves stewards of the brand and the land. When Donald Hess came to California in the 1970s, he was attracted to California wine and became fascinated with Mount Veeder. Although few in Napa Valley were cultivating vines at elevation, Donald Hess believed the volcanic slopes of Mount Veeder provided the ideal combination of soils and microclimates to yield elegant wines with rich, complex flavors.

A pioneer by nature, Donald Hess was determined to defy convention and pursue winemaking at elevation, so in 1978, he established The Hess Collection Winery on the site of one of the region’s oldest wineries. He took the opportunity to marry his two creative passions in life—wine and art—and he established an art gallery within the winery as a means of sharing his private art collection. Donald Hess and his wife, Ursula, met through their shared love of art, and today, Ursula’s daughter, Sabrina, and her husband, Tim, continue the family legacy of sharing wine and art and the family’s ongoing commitment to making both accessible to all.

Tim and Sabrina have chosen to call the Napa Valley their home. Tim was raised in Southern Africa and Europe, Sabrina raised in Switzerland and London, but the Napa Valley is where they have found their true calling. They strive to impart their own influence on the winery and support state-of-the-art innovations. Together, they continue to advance The Hess Collection as one of the premier family-owned and family-led companies in Napa Valley, and they are hopeful that someday their children too will carry on the Hess family heritage.
